Build the qualification plan around the mission profile

Connect the use environment, operating duration and failure risks to the evidence a qualification programme needs.

Describe the application

A maximum temperature is not a mission profile.

Define storage, transport, start-up, operation and shutdown where they are relevant. Capture durations, loading, duty cycles, thermal transitions and mechanical conditions. Distinguish ambient conditions from the stresses experienced by critical components.

Record assumptions explicitly, especially where the final application is still being developed. A plan should identify which assumptions would require reassessment if the product or mission changes.

Review existing evidence

Identify the gap before adding tests.

Compare manufacturer information, prior qualification data and design evidence with the proposed mission. Consider technology and package differences, manufacturing changes and whether the available specimens represent the intended production configuration.

A qualification matrix can link each requirement to the failure risks, existing evidence, proposed method and acceptance criteria. This makes omissions and duplicated tests easier to identify.

Make the plan executable

Define the decision as well as the stress.

Specify sample selection, preconditioning, stress sequence, monitoring, measurement intervals, failure criteria and anomaly handling. Include responsibility for interpretation and the technical report.

Separate qualification evidence from any statistical reliability demonstration or lifetime projection. If a service-life claim is required, the programme needs a justified relationship between the test, the failure process and use conditions, together with an appropriate treatment of statistical uncertainty.
