Component Uprating & Application-Specific Assurance

Research and engineering development for the use of commercial electronic components in mission-critical systems where published ratings or existing qualification evidence do not fully address the intended application.

The application challenge

When a critical component has no straightforward qualified alternative.

Electronic systems can depend on a component whose functionality is essential but whose manufacturer's operating envelope, qualification scope or available reliability evidence does not fully cover the intended conditions. In some cases, a functionally suitable and appropriately qualified alternative is not available.

The challenge is to establish what can reasonably be supported by evidence for a specific application, while identifying limits, unresolved risks and conditions requiring further development.

Engineering development

Extending engineering understanding, not merely applying another test.

SPACEREL undertakes research and engineering development relating to component uprating, application-specific assessment and qualification for demanding environments. This work draws on device behaviour, material and packaging reliability, environmental stress and long-term performance.

Additional screening or a passing test alone cannot establish suitability beyond manufacturer specifications. Evidence must be considered in the context of the component, its intended function and the application-specific risk. Project-specific technical approaches remain confidential.

Application environments

One engineering challenge, different programme requirements.

Potential applications include spacecraft electronics, aerospace and defence systems, energy, oil and gas, and other high-reliability or harsh-environment technologies. Thermal, electrical, mechanical, radiation, environmental and lifetime requirements vary by application, and individual assessments must respect the applicable assurance and regulatory framework.

A conclusion for one duty cycle or mission profile is not a blanket qualification for other uses.

Engineering assurance

Decisions supported by bounded technical evidence.

Development outcomes are expressed against defined operating requirements, with evidence, assumptions, uncertainties and remaining limitations clearly distinguished. An application-specific engineering assessment does not change published manufacturer ratings or imply third-party certification or approval.

Collaborative research

Bring a component challenge to the discussion.

SPACEREL welcomes confidential technical discussions with space and aerospace companies, defence technology developers, electronics manufacturers and organisations operating electronics in demanding environments. Collaborative R&D is structured around a genuine application need and an agreed technical objective.
